7 night Splendours of Jordan tour with Cox and Kings
This has been our best selling tour to Jordan for many years, and is run with a maximum group size of 20. The main reason customers choose this over others is that you get 3 nights in Petra - it is a very large site, so to see it without being rushed is most definitely welcome. About half our customers choose to add on extra nights by the Dead Sea at the end of the tour. I have been here, and the hotels are fabulous so it definitely worthwhile if you can afford the time.
Your Itinerary
- Amman - 2 nights
- Petra - 3 nights
- Dead Sea - 2 nights (can be extended)
Today your journeys starts with a flight from London Heathrow to Amman with Royal Jordanian Airlines. It's a surprisingly short flight at just over 5 hours.
On arrival, transfer to your hotel for 2 nights.
This morning enjoy a tour of Amman, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The city is built on seven hills (jebels) and your ascension to its hilltop citadel rewards you with panoramic views. Here you also see the ancient ruins of the Temple of Hercules, and the fascinating National Archaeological Museum.
The highlight of downtown Amman is the restored Roman theatre, a remnant of the days of the city of Philadelphia. Built into the side of a hill, the theatre dates back to the second century AD and has a capacity for 6,000 people.
In the afternoon, tour the well-preserved Graeco-Roman city of Jerash, hidden for centuries in sand. Tonight you will enjoy a welcome dinner.
Travel along the King’s Highway, visiting Madaba, home to a Byzantine mosaic map of the region. Next is the Biblical site of Mount Nebo, where Moses is reputed to be buried and where he first saw the Holy Land.
Then visit the crusader castle of Shobak. Afterwards, continue to the historic city of Petra for your 3 night stay.
Take a guided tour of Petra, the rose-red city rediscovered by JL Burckhardt in 1812. Please note that this tour involves walking over rough terrain, and at Petra, visiting the monastery and the High Place of Sacrifice requires a steep climb.
Return to the main site for more exploration with your guide. In the evening you have a chance to go back and see Petra by candlelight, a magical experience with over 1800 candles lighting the siq. This costs extra, but is well worth it.
Morning visit to Al Beidha, and 'Little Petra', before driving to Wadi Rum for a 4x4 excursion into the desert.
In the afternoon, transfer to the Dead Sea for 2 night stay although you can extend this if you wish.
Day at leisure. Optional morning excursion to the baptism site of Jesus in Bethany, on the banks of the River Jordan.
In the evening there'll be a farewell drink with the group.
Transfer to the airport and fly from Amman back to London Heathrow with Royal Jordanian Airlines.
