The charming resort of Fiskardo, Kefalonia
Fiskardo is one of the most charming resorts we've ever been to in Greece, and offers an idyllic setting for evening meals by the marina, and laid back days on the beach. There's enough restaurants for more than a 2 week holiday, set around the harbour and the village square, with food being above average quality.
It's easy to hire a car for a few days and explore the island a little, and indeed that's what we did with a 3 day hire. Myrtos Beach is a stunning beach and the setting for the filming of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Near Sami, there is a cave with brilliant blue coloured water and little boats ferry you around. Assos is another impossibly pretty village, although smaller than Fiskardo and has a Venetian castle. This was a great place to stop for a drink and admire the view! All these places are within easy reach of Fiskardo, and just driving will provide many amazing views.
Back in Fiskardo, we walked around to find a stunning beach, Emplisi - there were no sunbeds to rent but it did have a little cafe which was useful for drinks and lunch. Although it was a bit of a walk, it was a picture perfect setting.
We stayed in the Kalokeri Apartments which are about 10-15 minute walk uphill from the village. They are quite spacious and modern with a lovely pool and with fantastic views of the sea. There are kitchen facilities for self catering, but we really only used them for breakfast, preferring to head into the village for dinner and eat in one of the local restaurants by the marina.
The picture is taken sitting by the pool.
HOTEL OPTION
Almyra Hotel (Click here for hotel link) - This hotel is set in an idyllic hillside setting above Fiskardo and enjoys extraordinary views towards the Ionian Sea.
The village is an 800m walk down the hill, or the hotel provides a shuttle service; while the nearest beach, the white pebbled Emblisi Beach is a 15 minute walk away.
The owners have created a wonderfully authentic hotel with a cosy and welcoming ambiance and charming guest rooms.
A buffet breakfast of local and home-baked goods is available each morning, delightful lunches are served on the terrace, or the kitchen can prepare lovely picnic baskets (payable locally) for days out. Although evening dining is only available once a week when a special barbecue is organised, there are plenty of dining venues in Fiskardo, including the hotel owner's harbour-side restaurant, Tassia.
Guide Prices
A week typically costs from around £1,000 to £1,400 per person depending on when you go and how busy the flights are. As a general rule the earlier you book the cheaper it will be.
There are often some good deals for the Kalokeri Apartments - please ask - if not available, we sometimes have an excellent alternative down by the waterfront.
