Where to stay for a brilliant holiday on the Makarska Riviera
The region south from Split Airport is incredibly beautiful, with some lovely resorts perfect for a relaxing break. Some are smaller, and some are move lively, so this guide will hopefully help you decide which is right for you.
The city of Split itself is definitely worth a visit - the narrow cobbled streets of Old Split is a charming part of town to wander through while the highlight is the Diocletian's Palace, dating back to the 3rd century.
Further away are the beautiful KRKA Waterfalls and Plitvice Lakes, and many boat trips takes you to the Blue Cave, Hvar and Brac on a multi island tour.
Which Resort? Here's a very brief summary...
Makarska - the liveliest seaside resort on this part of Croatia's coast with lots to do and see
Brela - car free resort with a few hotels and several restaurants by the sea. The beach is shaded in parts by trees.
Omis - in a dramatic setting under the Biokovo Mountains, it's almost like a mini version of Split
Hvar Town - upscale resort on Hvar Island with a firtress and plenty of excellent restaurants. Can be busy in summer.
Baska Voda - another relaxing seaside resort, and slightly bigger than it's near neighbour Brela.

Maritimo, Makarska (3*, bed & breakfast) - close to the centre of Makarska on the seafront promenade, this is a small hotel - the restaurant is lovely!
Grand Hotel Slavia, Baska Voda (4.5*, bed & breakfast) - stay in an old Baroque Palace in the centre of Baska Voda - you're within easy walking distance of the beach and the harbour.
Plaza Duce, near Omis (4*, bed & breakfast) - stylish hotel on the beach with amazing views as the resort sits under Biokovo Mountain.
Aminess Khalani, Makarska (5*, bed & breakfast) - amazing location set under Biokovo Mountain, with a great beach, and choice of 3 pools.
Bluesun Maestral, Brela (4*, bed & breakfast) - modern hotel on the hillside above Brela - relax by the pool or stroll into Brela and it's traffic free promenade with idyllic cafes and restaurants by the sea.
Adriana Hvar Spa, Hvar Town (4*, bed & breakfast) - stylish hotel right on the harbour front in Hvar Town, with rooftop terrace, luxurious spa and close to the beach.
