The 13 night Cape Town, Garden Route & Safari Road Trip

One of the most popular South African trips as it includes almost all the main highlights without having to take internal flights. It's best done as a road trip if you want longer stays in each place, but there are several guided tours we can offer if you prefer.

Along the way you'll dive past amazing scenery both inland and along the coast, and enjoy a safari where you can see the big 5 without having to worry about malaria. But first, start off in Cape Town and Table Mountain.

Please give us an idea of the type of accommodation you'd like. In some places the choice is anything from small hotels and guesthouses right up to luxury hotels. Naturally the small guest houses only have a limited number of rooms and the better ones get booked up well in advance. For this reason please use the suggested hotels as a guide to what might be available. In many cases we have to offer an alternative if there's no available rooms left.

You may also choose to have a guide with you for some of your time in Cape Town, perhaps on the first full day?

Cape Town
3 nights

Fly from the UK to Cape Town and after collecting your hire car make your way to your hotel for the first 3 nights.

The highlight is a trip up the cable car to the top of Table Mountain, although there are also various hiking routes.

You could take a drive outside Cape Town to Boulders Beach to see the penguins, and south to Cape Point which is the South-West tip of Africa. The drive there is excellent, passing through some lovely villages and great beaches.

Back near the city are the superb Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, while the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is the main heart of the tourist area with lots of shops, cafes and restaurants.

Please remember that a 3 night stay means just 2 full days, so perhaps add a 4th night to your stay in Cape Town.

Stellenbosch
2 nights

Both Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are well known for their quality of restaurants and wineries, with many offering wine tours and tastings, and you could stay in either. Both are very pretty, with Stellenbosch being larger and therefore more to see and do, although that means it's busier. We'd be happy to go through which might be best for you, although it might end up depending somewhat on what accommodation is available.

Oudtshoorn
2 nights

This is a very scenic drive along 'Route 62' and takes you to Oudtshoorn which is known for its ostriches. But there's also the Cango Caves, and if you want another spectacular drive then head northwards to Price Albert over the Swartberg Pass.

Please note that to save time you could reduce the stay here to 1 night, however after a decent drive to get here, it's nice to have a full day to explore the area or just stay and enjoy the hotel facilities.

Plettenberg Bay
3 nights

Nest head South and then it's another spectacular drive along the coast road to Plettenberg Bay. But before you get there, you'll pass through places like George, Wilderness and Knysna which you can even go back to if you wish during your stay in Plettenberg Bay.

There are some excellent animal themed choices including Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Tenikwa Wildcat Park, plus some great beaches that are OK for swimming.

Tsitsikamma National Park has some excellent walking trails, and boat trips take you out to see the Cape Fur Seal Colony and possible dolphins. Between June and November whales are in the area too.

Drive through the Tsitsikamma Forest towards the Eastern Cape Game Reserves. Again there's a wide variety of accommodation, and you can often choose between a self driving safari and going on an organised safari, or doing a bit of both. The self drive safaris mean that you can stay as long as you like in a particular spot, but with the group safaris the guides may be better equipped to spot the wildlife.

Some of the wildlife you'd hopefully see include (elephant, lion, buffalo, black rhino, leopard, hippo, warthogs, eland, kudu, bushbuck, hyena, jackal and antelope. Horseback safaris and canoe trips are also available.

Finally at the end of your trip, drive to Port Elizabeth Airport for your flight back to the UK via Johannesburg onward perhaps to Mauritius?
