Skiathos

One of the best Greek Islands with superb beaches and lovely town

Skiathos is a relatively small island with most hotels located on the South and South-East coastline. The beaches are some of the best in Greece, and in fact one of them is said to be in the top 10 in Europe!

Together with it's near neighbour Skopelos, there's quite a few references to the filming of Mamma Mia including an open air cinema.

For my own trip we stayed in a resort called Troulos, with enough good tavernas dotted around for a different one each night, and an excellent beach. A bus runs along the south coast road to Skiathos Town, so it's easy to get around, but in the other direction Koukounaries is the next (and last) resort, and this is the one with the magnificent beach.

In Skiathos Town there's lots more tavernas and restaurants, and a number of good walks with great views over the town and sea. Boat trips to Skopelos are widely advertised, and the chance to visit Agios Ioannis Chapel, famous from Mamma Mia.

Recommended Hotels and Apartments

• Filia Studios, Troulos (3*, self catering) - family run studios situated on the hillside above Troulos.
• Paschalis Studios, Agia Paraskevi (3*, self catering) - in a peaceful location close to Agia Paraskevi which has a good selection of tavernas and a decent beach.
• Skiathos Palace Hotel, Koukounaries (4*, bed & breakfast) - in a great location close to the beach near Koukounaries, this is a larger hotel with a good pool, a couple of nice restaurants and 3 bars. Great views.
• Skiathos Premier, Troulos (4*, self catering) - excellent location for local tavernas in Troulos, and a couple of good pools with a snack bar serving a range of drinks.
• Skiathos Avaton Suites & Villas, Megali Ammos (3*, bed & breakfast) - excellent accommodation close to a sandy beach and just walkable to Skiathos Town which is only a mile away. All suites come with an outdoor whirlpool.
• Skiathos Princess, Agia Paraskevi (4*, bed & breakfast) - the beachfront location is ideal because it's also in the resort centre with plenty of local tavernas as well as the 3 restaurants of the hotel.
• KB Ammos Suites, Megali Ammos (4.5*, bed & breakfast) - adults only boutique hotel for a relaxing stay, in a great location close to the beach and local tavernas, and Skiathos Town is just over half a mile away.
• Elivi Resort, Koukounaries (4.5*, bed & breakfast) - larger hotel in a prime beachfront location in Koukounaries, it has several bars and restaurants and a choice of 3 pools.
• Aegean Suites, Megali Ammos (5*, bed & breakfast) - premium, adults only, beachfront hotel about a mile from Skiathos Town, with quality service and dining options.
